In late 2022, I was invited to go to Ghana with a friend researching work by the Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, who first made a splash at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. We were going to Ghana to learn about the context of his work and also to understand the emerging contemporary art scene in the country. Over the past few decades, the art world has opened up beyond Europe and North America to create a more globalized market. In recent years artists like Mr. Mahama, and the fellow Ghanaians El Anatsui and Amoako Boafo have risen to prominence. We wanted to learn how that attention had affected contemporary art in Ghana.

New York CNN —Trader Joe’s has issued another food recall — its sixth since July. Last week, the chain announced that it’s recalling its Texas Tamale Company Gourmet Black Bean Tamales because they might contain milk allergens. Trader Joe’s said that the tamales with “undeclared milk” were sold in nine states, including Texas, Colorado and New Mexico, with the UPC number 717725000580. Texas Tamale Co. issues a recall for undeclared milk in their black bean tamales. We urge you to discard the product or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund,” Trader Joe’s wrote on its website.

For Texas tamale purveyors such as Delia’s, it is crunchtime as demand for the traditional treat surges. SAN JUAN, Texas—Preorders for Christmas tamales begin in July at Delia’s, a South Texas chain with a fervent regional following. By mid-December, constables must be on hand to direct lines of cars stretching down the street to get into restaurants. On a recent morning at Delia’s San Juan location, Gabriel Murillo, an IT manager for the local school district, was picking up a cooler with more than a thousand tamales to be served at a holiday staff appreciation luncheon. Outside, two semitrailer trucks were loaded with boxes of online orders waiting to be shipped.
